Sammamish Soccer Program

Mission Statement
The purpose of High School athletics is to provide an opportunity for kids to grow in a safe environment that teaches work ethic, commitment, teamwork, relationship building, goal setting, responsibility and other life skills.

Any violation of team or school rules will have consequences.

  • All Student Athletes are to read and understand the “player conduct” policy concerning drugs and alcohol, which was included in each player’s preseason packet. Any violation of the “player conduct” policy WILL result in disciplinary action being taken. The severity of the punishment will be in accordance with the “player conduct” policy penalties.
  • All Student Athletes will conduct themselves in a manner that will reflect positively on our school and soccer program at all times. (If you need a definition of “positively” see coach Gonyea) This includes anytime (weekends included) and everywhere (off campus or on campus) you go while you are a member of the Sammamish soccer program. Any indiscretions that a student athlete is involved in WILL have consequences. The consequences will follow school policy and/or be determined by Sammamish administration and the coaching staff of the Sammamish soccer program.
  • All Student Athletes will treat people with the utmost respect. This includes coaches, fellow players (including the opposition), referee’s, teachers, parents and anyone else that you may come in contact with.
  • There will be ABSOLUTLY no putting ANYONE down. A first offense will result in a loss of playing time. Repeated offenses can and will lead to dismissal from the team. Please, treat others as you would like to be treated.

Grades

  •  All players are students first and athletes second. Low grades and poor effort in the classroom WILL result in decreased playing time and/or suspension from the team. KEEP YOUR GRADES UP!!!!!
  • Grades must meet the standards. To practice you must have had above a 2.0 GPA last semester. You also must be passing 6 out of 7 classes to be academically eligible. This does not mean you cannot try out or be part of the program. However understand there will be a minimum of 3 weeks suspension in which that time you will have to reach these minimums.
  • For every game day, practice, and tryout date, you must attend AT LEAST 5 of your 7 classes in the day.

General

  •  You must have an ASB card Again, Mrs. Stillwell can lead in you in the right direction, if you don’t have one already they are $45.
  • All fines owed to the school must be paid. If you owe money to the school for anything, it must be paid off.

Transportation

  • All student/athletes will be required to ride the team bus to all away games and back to Sammamish.  Parents may pick up all student athletes at Sammamish High School after away games.

Varsity Soccer Players

Being a varsity player in any sport is exciting. Along with competing at the highest level comes a different level of commitment that a Student Athlete must show. The expectations are higher as are the rewards. I have compiled a list of guidelines that will hopefully help the Sammamish soccer program achieve its ultimate goal, creating an enjoyable learning experience for the student athlete.

Playing Time
The number one concern of everyone involved is usually, “How much am I going to play?” I am going to be as up front and honest as I can about playing time. With that being said, some players on varsity may not make it into the game. Playing time will be based on several factors including effort, attitude, opponent, grades, attendance and ability. It is my intention to reward the players that are working hard at practice, following team rules, keeping their grades up and displaying a supportive attitude to the team.

I have several rules that pertain to playing time that are listed below:

  1. Any Student Athlete missing a practice the day before a game WILL NOT start and be held out of the match for at least 15 minutes.
  2. If a Student Athlete is injured they still need to be at practice. If rehab is needed they can do it at practice.
  3. Schoolwork is not an excuse. Please stay on top of your schoolwork so this does not become an issue.
  4. If attendance at practice becomes an ongoing issue the Student Athlete may be suspended or removed from the team.
  5. Any Student Athlete missing a team bus will be suspended from the team for at least one game.
Any violation of the rules mentioned earlier may also result in the loss of playing time.

Lettering
It is my intention to reward the Student Athlete that help’s Sammamish soccer achieve success. It is also my intention to make a Varsity letter something that is worked for and cherished. I have come up with the following criteria for lettering in soccer at Sammamish.

  1. Student Athlete’s must play in at least 4 varsity games (any amount of time is considered a game).
  2. Student Athlete must be a member in good standing at the end of the season.
  3. Any Student Athlete that is deemed to have contributed to the good of the varsity team by the coaching staff and or administration may also receive a letter.

New Rule Change

Yellow Cards: Individuals that accumulate four (4) individual yellow cards, where a red card did not occur, (including preseason, excluding playoffs) will be required to sit out the game following the fourth individual card. The accumulation of cards does not count as an “ejection.” Double jeopardy will not occur, as the league penalty applies for an accumulation of “individual” yellow cards in “different” games. (Example: If an individual receives a yellow card in one game, two yellow cards in the next game, they still have only one yellow card for their league total, and would need an individual yellow from three more games to be penalized by the league.) National Federation rules regarding the accumulation of two yellow cards in one game must still be adhered to. Refer to KingCo Handbook section 24 and 25 D for specifics regarding fighting ejections

Conclusion

In conclusion, I want to say that I am excited about the challenge of the upcoming season and am looking forward to working and developing all of the Student Athletes involved in Sammamish soccer.  My goal for the  soccer program at Sammamish is to create a "team" concept between coaches and players.  More importantly, I want ALL players to be involved in creating a winning atmosphere at Sammamish.  I am going to do my best to put together a TEAM that plays well together and supports each other.  NO PLAYER IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN THE TEAM!!!!!!  I know that if we accomplish this goal then the Student Athlete at Sammamish will walk away with a great experience while learning a game that can be played well after they graduate from High School.

I am looking forward to helping you become the best soccer players you can be.  Best of luck!!!!
