WINTER BREAK NO BREAK FOR WRESTLERS
The Sammamish wrestlers had a busy break, taking part in
three meets over the holiday.
This stretch started
with the Totems first seeded tournament on Saturday December
18th at Nathan Hale High School in Seattle. With
brackets of up to 12 wrestlers, each individual was
guaranteed to come up against some decent competition.
Out of the 12 Sammamish wrestlers competing 9 walked away
with at least one victory. The highlights of the
tournament came at 152 where Tomas Narvaja fought to a 3-1
record including two first period pins, giving him a 3rd
place finish. At 171 the Totems had two wrestlers
competing with Paco Jacinto the scoring wrestler being the
only Sammamish wrestler in the finals. He ended his
day with a second place finish while non-scorer Junior
Benitez finished just behind him in third place. All
wrestlers gained valuable experience in their first
tournament that follows the championship format. The
Totems finished 7th out of 8 as a team.
Following the Nathan Hale Tournament, the Sammamish wresters
took little time before returning to the mat.
On
Monday December 20th 11 wrestlers headed to Highline High
School to
compete in another 4 man round robin tournament. The
meet turned out to be an overwhelming success as the team
finished the day with a 24-8 match record. This
included at least one victory for every wrestler that
competed and undefeated records from 4 Sammamish Wrestlers.
The hard work being put in every day really showed in the
improvements made from the start of the season to the High
Line Tournament. Below is a list of the match records
of the 11 Sammamish wrestlers at Highline.
Juan Quijada 2-1
A.J. Leitch 1-2
Jake Phillips 2-1
David Bloomsburg- 3-0
Zanwar Faraj 1-1
Tomas Narvaja 3-0
Kyle Kasner 2-1
Junior Benitez 3-0
Max Hummer 3-0
Paco Jacinto 2-1
Juan Hernandez 2-1
The Totems finished their busy two weeks of competition with
their most competitive tournament of the season Thursday
December 30th at Eastside Catholic. The meet consisted of 18
teams competing in 16 man brackets. This format
ensured a grueling day of wrestling with up to 5 matches for
those who survived the gauntlet of difficult
competition. Several Sammamish wrestlers were able to
compete very well against the competition. Junior
Benitez, wrestling at 160 for the first time this year
finished with a 4-1 record and a share of 3rd place (3rd
place matches were not wrestled because of the WIAA rule
that does not allow a wrester to compete in more than 5
matches in one day). Juniors first match was a hard
fought 9-7 overtime victory which set the stage for his
impressive run to 3rd place. Paco Jacinto also had a
great day finishing at 3-1 and sharing the 3rd place spot at
171. Paco wrestled his way to the Championship semi
final match before falling to the eventual champion from
Cedarcrest. He would win by fall in his following
match to secure a medal and 3rd place finish. Zanwar
Faraj and John Hernandez also reached the semi finals
(Zanwar at 145, and John at 140). Zanwar, John, and
Tomas Narvaja (152) all would earn a share of 5th place at
the tournament. The day proved to be a positive
experience for the Totems who finished 12th out of 18 teams
and were in the top 10 at different times in the tournament
before eventually falling to the 12th place spot. The
team will return to action on Thursday January 6th at
Liberty.

The Totems returned to dual meet action against the League opponent
Juanita Rebels. The Rebels proved to be another difficult team for the
visiting Sammamish wrestlers. We came away with 6 points from a forfeit at
112 and a Major Decision at 130 by Jacob Phillips which accounted for all
the scoring by the Totems in the 65-10 loss. Despite the lopsided score,
the squad showed improvement through their ability to extend matches and
give themselves a chance. 5 of the Sammamish losses went into the third
period with 3 of those matches going the full six minutes. The young Totems
are showing growth daily and are looking forward to being at full strength
with several wrestlers ready to see their first action in the next couple
weeks.
