Wrestling Program

Welcome to the Sammamish Wrestling Program. The 2008-2009 season will be the first year that the Totems are led by Coaches, Mac and Griswold. Our program philosophy is based around our athletes. We want our athletes to achieve success in the classroom, life, and on the wrestling mat. Wrestling is a great sport that helps young athletes build a strong work ethic that will help in future endeavors.

As coaches, we will ensure that our athletes have a clean and fun practice facility. We are adding a couple of awards to our program which will invoke tradition amongst our athletes. On the walls of our wrestling room we will have a section titled “State Placers and Qualifiers” and “Four Year Commitments”. Athletes that qualify or place for the state tournament will have a plaque with their name put upon this section of the wall. Athletes that participate for four years on the wrestling team whether they are Varsity or JV will have a plaque with their picture and name put upon the wall symbolizing their commitment to their teammates.

Awards that will be given out this season:

1.      Wrestlers of the week(12)

2.      Varsity MVP

3.      Junior Varsity MVP

4.      Freshman Award

5.      Academic Excellence Award

6.      Ironman Award

7.      Most Improved (Varsity and JV)

8.      Four Year Commitment(Given to Seniors)

Team Guidelines:

  1. Demonstrate Sportsmanship
  2. Be Punctual: Show up early or on time.
  3. Work Hard
  4. Drugs and Alcohol will not be tolerated.
  5. Little things matter. Stand apart from other programs by being respectful to all and helping clean/roll mats at tournaments.

Goal Setting:

At the beginning of the season every athlete will sit down with one of the coaches and state their season goals. These goals will be written down and filed away. At the end of the season the goals will be handed back. This will help with motivation. Athletes will gain a sense of accomplishment and show what areas need improvement.

Wrestle off/Lettering Policy:

Varsity spots will be determined a week before the first match. Wrestle offs will happen every Monday. Whoever wins that wrestle off will be varsity for that week. Wrestle offs will continue until the second week of January. Varsity spots are not controversial as they are in other sports. Whoever wins the wrestle off is varsity for that week. Every wrestler is given an opportunity to be varsity.

            Our lettering policy is:

1.      If a wrestler competes in 10 varsity matches they will receive a letter.

2.      If a wrestler qualifies for the league tournament through the JV qualifier they will receive a letter.

3.      A Junior Varsity wrestler that has completed their third full year will receive a letter.

Weight Management:

The WIAA has instituted a new policy regarding weight classes. Wrestlers must be tested before the season starts to ensure they compete in a healthy weight class conducive with their body type. This is a good policy because it protects our athletes from losing weight and encourages a healthy lifestyle. The Test date that Sammamish High will attend is:

Saturday- November 22nd  at Newport High at 10 am.

Bring your Photo ID(ASB, Drivers License, etc) and $5.00

*Other test dates are available talk to Coach Mac if unable to attend this date.
